For this specific itinerary, September through mid-October is the sweet spot, the Aeolian Islands ferry services are fully operational, the sea at Vulcano and Cefalù is warm from summer, Taormina's Ancient Theatre is at its most atmospheric in warm evening light, and Palermo's outdoor markets and street food scene are at their most vibrant. If spring is more convenient, May through early June is equally excellent.
Getting Around: Transfers & Train Travel
One of this itinerary's key strengths is that it requires no rental car. The route is designed around private transfers for airport and ferry connections, and comfortable coastal train rides for the northern legs.

Book Il Cappero well before your trip. Therasia's Michelin-starred restaurant is one of the most sought-after dinner reservations in the Aeolian Islands. Contact the resort directly when booking your hotel stay and request a dinner reservation at the same time, this is the surest way to secure a table. For peak season, book 2–3 months in advance.
Pre-book the Palatine Chapel. The Cappella Palatina in Palermo's Palazzo dei Normanni requires timed entry tickets purchased in advance. In peak season, walk-up entry is often unavailable entirely. Book online before your trip, this is one of the non-negotiable pre-planning steps for this itinerary.
Book hydrofoil tickets in advance. The Milazzo-Vulcano hydrofoil is popular in summer and early fall, departures can sell out, particularly on weekends. Palermo's Ballarò is one of Italy's great food markets and one of the finest street food experiences in Europe, but only if you arrive genuinely hungry in the late morning. Panelle, arancini, stigghiola, frittola, and sfincione (Palermo-style pizza) consumed standing at market stalls is as authentic as Sicilian eating gets.
Pack for multiple climates. This itinerary moves between sea-level beach stays (Taormina, Cefalù), a volcanic island (Vulcano, where coastal winds can be cool at night), and an urban capital (Palermo).
