14-Day Luxury Fall Italy Itinerary
Rome, Tuscany, Florence, Venice, the Dolomites, and Lake Como, the complete fall Italy grand tour with iconic hotels, private transfers, and the best of Italy in its most beautiful season.
There is no better version of Italy than Italy in fall. The summer hordes have thinned, the light has turned from bleaching-white to something richer and more golden, the Tuscan vineyards are deep crimson and amber at harvest, and the Dolomites, those extraordinary pink-tinged limestone peaks, glow with autumn colour in a way that photographs have never quite managed to capture. Every destination on this itinerary is better in September, October, and November than it is in any other season.
This 14-day luxury fall Italy grand tour is designed for travelers who want to experience the country's greatest destinations, Rome, Tuscany, Florence, Venice, the Dolomites, and Lake Como, at a genuinely relaxed, unhurried pace, with stays at properties that are destinations in themselves. Not a rush between monuments, but an immersive journey through six completely distinct Italian experiences, each given the time it deserves.
The hotels were chosen with particular care. Hotel Eden in Rome for its Michelin-starred rooftop and Spanish Steps proximity. Il Falconiere in Tuscany for vineyard dinners and world-class spa treatments. The Four Seasons Florence for the most beautiful private garden in Italy. The Gritti Palace in Venice for its legendary Grand Canal palazzo. San Luis Lodges in the Dolomites for lakefront alpine treehouses. Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como for the floating pool and views of Bellagio. Every night of this trip is an occasion.
"Italy in fall is the country at its most beautiful, golden vineyards, cool mountain air, and six extraordinary destinations revealed in their finest season."
- Cooler temperatures, Rome and Florence become genuinely pleasant for walking and sightseeing once August's heat breaks. The Dolomites and Lake Como are crisp and spectacular in autumn light.
- Smaller crowds, the Uffizi, the Colosseum, the Gritti Palace terrace, and St. Mark's Square are all dramatically more enjoyable without summer's peak numbers.
- Grape harvest season, Tuscany's vineyards turn gold and crimson in October; wine harvest festivals and truffle markets open across the region from late September.
- Autumn food culture, truffle season peaks in October and November, game appears on menus, and the hearty mountain cooking of the Dolomites and Lake Como reaches its annual zenith.
- Better hotel value, rack rates at all six properties drop meaningfully from peak summer levels, and VIP upgrade availability improves significantly.

Getting Between Destinations
This itinerary uses a combination of private transfers and Italy's excellent high-speed rail network. The connections are comfortable, well-timed, and designed to add to the journey rather than interrupt it.
Private transfer, approximately 2–2.5 hours depending on your Tuscan property's location. The most comfortable option, with your luggage handled door-to-door. Scenic route options exist via the Autostrada del Sole or through the Lazio countryside.
Private transfer or train, approximately 1–1.5 hours by car from Cortona to Florence, or train from Camucia-Cortona station (~90 minutes). Both are straightforward; private transfer is recommended if you have significant luggage.
High-speed train (Frecciarossa), approximately 2 hours from Santa Maria Novella to Venice Santa Lucia. One of Italy's finest rail journeys. The train arrives directly in Venice, take a water taxi from the station to The Gritti Palace. Book tickets in advance on Trenitalia.
Private transfer, approximately 2–2.5 hours from Venice to the San Luis Lodges area (Val Pusteria / Alta Badia). The most practical connection for this stretch, train options exist but are slow and involve multiple changes.
Private transfer, approximately 3 hours via the Brenner Pass approach or through the Adige Valley. A spectacularly scenic drive through Alpine passes and Lombardy's lake district, arriving at Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Como's western shore.
Private transfer, approximately 1 hour from Tremezzo to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), or slightly longer to Milan Linate (LIN). Book your transfer the day before departure and allow extra time for Alpine lake road traffic on busy weekends.
Days 1–2: Rome, History, Culture & Timeless Elegance
Rome in fall is Rome at its most livable. September and October bring relief from the crushing summer heat, the light turns from harsh to honeyed, and the city's outdoor terraces, piazzas, and fountain-side cafes become genuinely pleasant places to linger. Begin here, and begin slowly.
Day 1, Arrival & First Impressions
- Fly into Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and transfer to Hotel Eden near the Spanish Steps. Check in and allow yourself an afternoon to simply absorb the city at its own rhythm, a walk to the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and the Via Condotti boutiques before dinner.
- First dinner at a neighbourhood trattoria in the Prati or Trastevere districts, order cacio e pepe or carbonara. Rome's pasta is unlike anywhere else in Italy and should be approached seriously from the first evening.
Day 2, Rome's Greatest Monuments
- Morning: Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill, pre-book timed entry to avoid queues. The Forum in fall morning light, with the golden stone glowing and mist still in the air, is one of the great travel experiences in Europe.
- Afternoon: Vatican City, St. Peter's Basilica (free entry), the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel. Pre-book skip-the-line access well in advance; the Museums without a booking is a 2-hour wait in any season.
- The Pantheon is a 10-minute walk from the Campo de' Fiori, one of the greatest surviving ancient buildings in the world and inexplicably unqueued compared to the Colosseum. Timed entry tickets are now required; book online.

Tuscany in October is arguably the most beautiful landscape in all of Europe. The grape harvest transforms the Chianti and Cortona countryside into a tapestry of gold, crimson, and amber; the air smells of fermentation and wood smoke; and truffle hunters emerge in the forests as the season peaks. Staying at Il Falconiere puts you in the absolute heart of it.
Day 3, Arrive in Tuscany
- Private transfer from Rome through the Umbrian and Tuscan countryside to Il Falconiere near Cortona, a Relais & Chateaux property set in a historic villa surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.
- Afternoon walk through the estate's gardens and vineyard before an evening drink on the terrace as the Tuscan light fades over the hills.
- Dinner at Il Falconiere's Michelin-starred restaurant, one of the finest country dining experiences in all of Tuscany, using estate-grown ingredients and local seasonal produce at its fall peak.
Day 4, Cortona, Montepulciano & Truffle Season
- Morning: explore Cortona, the beautiful Etruscan hilltop town made internationally famous by Frances Mayes' Under the Tuscan Sun. Walk the steep medieval streets, visit the Diocesano Museum's Fra Angelico Annunciation, and find a cafe on Piazza della Repubblica for an espresso with views over the Val di Chiana.
- Afternoon: day trip to Montepulciano (~45 minutes) for a Vino Nobile tasting in one of the cellars built into the tufa rock beneath the town, or to Siena for a full afternoon in its extraordinary Piazza del Campo.
- October option: a truffle hunt in the forests around Cortona with a local trufaraio and his dogs, one of Tuscany's most memorable autumn experiences, ending with a lunch incorporating the morning's finds.
- Alternative: wine tasting at a family-run vineyard during harvest, when the grapes are being pressed and the entire estate smells of fermentation, the experience is completely different from any other time of year.

Get VIP Perks →Days 5–6: Florence, Renaissance Splendor
Florence is the city that invented the Renaissance, and in fall, when summer's peak crowds have thinned and the city's terracotta rooftops glow in the amber afternoon light, it shows you exactly why. Two nights is the right amount of time to cover the essential masterpieces without rushing, and the Four Seasons Florence provides a base of extraordinary luxury in the heart of the city.
Day 5, Arrival & First Florence Afternoon
- Check into Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, a restored Renaissance palace set within the largest private garden in Florence, one of Italy's most beautiful hotel experiences. Spend the afternoon in the gardens before heading into the city.
- Walk to the Ponte Vecchio and cross to Oltrarno, Florence's artisan quarter, with the best wine bars, trattorias, and craft workshops in the city. The Piazzale Michelangelo viewpoint is a 20-minute walk from here; go at sunset for the city's finest vista.
- Dinner in Oltrarno, the neighborhood has Florence's best casual and mid-range dining, from Buca Mario to the excellent independent wine bars (enoteche) along Via dei Serragli.
Day 6, The Uffizi, Duomo & Accademia
- Morning: Uffizi Gallery, Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Primavera, Leonardo's Annunciation, Michelangelo's Doni Tondo, Caravaggio's Medusa. Pre-book timed entry well in advance. Allow 3 hours minimum for a thorough visit.
- Afternoon: visit the Duomo di Firenze complex, Brunelleschi's dome (climb for panoramic views over the city), the Baptistery's bronze doors, and Giotto's Campanile. Consider the Accademia Gallery for Michelangelo's David, pre-book to avoid queues.
- Evening: bistecca alla Fiorentina dinner, Florence's legendary T-bone steak, aged for weeks and served rare, paired with Chianti Classico Riserva. This is mandatory. Buca Mario and Trattoria Sostanza are two of the finest tables for it.
Florence's Greatest Hotel
Book through me for complimentary breakfast, room upgrade when available, and resort credit at this legendary Florentine address.
Get VIP Perks →Days 7–8: Venice, Canals, Palaces & Gondolas
Venice in fall is Venice at its most atmospheric. October brings the acqua alta (the seasonal high tides that flood Piazza San Marco briefly), autumn mist rising from the canals in the early morning, and a city that is genuinely, breathtakingly quieter than it is at any point in summer. The Gritti Palace on the Grand Canal is one of the world's great hotel experiences, and arriving by water taxi from the train station, watching the city approach across the lagoon, is the finest possible way to enter Venice.
Day 7, Arrival & Grand Canal First Evening
- High-speed train from Florence to Venice Santa Lucia station (~2 hours). Take a water taxi directly to The Gritti Palace, arriving at a Grand Canal palazzo by boat is the correct introduction to Venice, and worth the expense over the cheaper vaporetto.
- Afternoon on The Gritti Palace's legendary terrace, the view directly onto the Grand Canal, with gondolas and traghetti passing just below, is one of the great hotel terraces in the world.
- Evening: a first wander through Venice's alleys and over its bridges, getting deliberately lost is mandatory, and in fall, when the city empties of summer crowds by 7pm, the experience is extraordinary.
Day 8, Venice's Greatest Sights
- Morning: St. Mark's Basilica, go at opening (9am) before the crowds build. The gold mosaic interior is staggeringly beautiful in the morning light filtering through the upper windows. Pre-book online for skip-the-line entry.
- Doge's Palace, the magnificent Gothic palace of Venice's rulers, with Tintoretto's vast Paradise in the Grand Council Chamber. Secret Itineraries tour (book in advance) accesses the prison where Casanova was held.
- Afternoon: gondola ride through the smaller canals, not the main Grand Canal tourist route, but a 45-minute private gondola through the quieter sestieri for a completely different perspective on the city.
- Day trip to Murano (glassmaking demonstrations at ancient furnaces) and Burano (the most colorful island in the lagoon) by vaporetto, a wonderful half-day excursion from central Venice.
Venice's Greatest Palazzo
Book through me for complimentary breakfast, room upgrade when available, and resort credit at this iconic Venetian address.
Get VIP Perks →Days 9–10: The Dolomites, Alpine Escape
The Dolomites are one of Europe's greatest natural landscapes, a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range of pale pink and ivory limestone peaks rising above pine forests and Alpine meadows. In fall, the larch trees turn a vivid gold that contrasts with the white rock faces above, creating one of the most spectacular natural colour displays on the continent. After the cities, the clean mountain air and utter quiet of San Luis Lodges is a profound reset.
Day 9, Arrival in the Dolomites
- Private transfer from Venice north through the Veneto and into the Alpine valleys, the drive itself is beautiful, ascending through the foothills into the Dolomite valleys as the mountains begin to dominate the horizon.
- Check into San Luis Lodges, an enchanting alpine retreat of lakefront chalets and treehouses nestled in forest, with its own lake, alpine spa, and a setting of extraordinary natural beauty.
- Afternoon walk through the forest or an introductory hike from the lodge, the area's trail network is accessible directly from the property in most weather conditions.
- Dinner at the lodge's restaurant featuring local South Tyrolean cuisine, speck (the local cured ham), canederli (bread dumplings in broth), venison ragu, strudel, hearty, deeply flavoured mountain food that is perfect after a day in cold mountain air.
Day 10, Dolomites Hiking & Alpine Spa
- Morning hike through UNESCO-protected mountain scenery, the area offers trails from easy valley walks to more challenging ascents depending on your fitness level and the autumn weather. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop (accessible by car and then on foot) is one of the Dolomites' most iconic hikes; allow a full morning for it in fall conditions.
- Afternoon: alpine spa at San Luis Lodges, relax with mountain views, thermal pool, sauna, and treatments using local alpine botanicals. The combination of a Dolomites morning hike and an afternoon spa session is one of the finest luxury travel experiences Italy offers.
- Gourmet dinner featuring the best of South Tyrolean autumn produce, the lodge's kitchen takes local ingredients seriously, and this is one of Italy's most underrated regional food traditions.
Most Extraordinary Setting

Get VIP Perks →Days 11–14: Lake Como, Lakeside Luxury
Lake Como is the finale this grand tour has been building toward, four nights of pure, unhurried lakeside luxury at one of Italy's most beautiful and celebrated hotels. With Bellagio across the water, the Alps rising behind, and the Grand Hotel Tremezzo's legendary floating pool on the lake in front of you, the temptation to simply stay on the terrace and not move is entirely understandable. Resist it, the lake and its villages reward exploration, but not entirely.
Day 11, Arrive at Grand Hotel Tremezzo
- Private transfer from the Dolomites through the Lombard lake district, the descent from the Alps into the Lake Como basin, with the first views of the water appearing through the mountain forests, is a genuinely beautiful moment.
- Check into Grand Hotel Tremezzo for 4 nights. The hotel's floating pool on the lake, with Bellagio directly across the water, is the most extraordinary swimming experience in northern Italy. Use the remainder of the afternoon for it.
- Dinner on the terrace overlooking the lake, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo's dining has improved dramatically in recent years, and the setting alone justifies staying in for at least one evening.
Day 12, Bellagio & Private Boat Tour
- Morning: private boat tour of Lake Como, hire a classic wooden Riva speedboat from the hotel's dock and explore the lake at your own pace: Villa Balbianello (perhaps the most romantic garden in Italy), the Villa d'Este gardens at Cernobbio, and the smaller villages of the eastern shore that most visitors never reach.
- Afternoon in Bellagio, the most beautiful town on the lake, at the tip of the central peninsula. Walk the stepped alleys, visit the Villa Serbelloni gardens (book in advance for the guided tour), and find a lakeside cafe for a long, slow afternoon aperitivo.
Day 13, Varenna, Menaggio & Villa Gardens
- Morning: ferry to Varenna on the eastern shore, a quieter, less visited village with a beautiful waterfront promenade and the extraordinary Villa Monastero gardens. Stroll the Passerella (the lakeside walkway) before the day-trippers arrive.
- Afternoon: Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo (a 10-minute walk from the hotel), one of the finest botanical gardens on the lake, with extraordinary azalea and rhododendron collections, a Canova sculpture gallery, and terraced gardens descending to the water's edge. In fall, the gardens take on a different but equally beautiful character.
- Menaggio for evening, the relaxed western-shore town with excellent restaurants and a particularly pleasant lakeside piazza for an aperitivo as the light fades over the mountains.
Day 14, Final Morning on the Lake
- A final morning on the Grand Hotel Tremezzo's terrace or floating pool, Lake Como at its most beautiful in fall morning light, with mist rising from the water and the Alps sharply defined against a blue sky.
- Private transfer to Milan Malpensa Airport (~1 hour) for international departure, or into Milan itself for a final afternoon of shopping on Via Montenapoleone and dinner before a late flight.
Lake Como's Finest
Book through me for complimentary breakfast, room upgrade when available, and resort credit at this legendary Lake Como address.
Get VIP Perks →Departure from Milan
- Your private driver will collect you from Grand Hotel Tremezzo and transfer you to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) for your international flight home, approximately 1 hour from Tremezzo in normal traffic.
- If your flight is late afternoon or evening, consider spending your final morning in Milan itself, the city is 45 minutes from the hotel. Via Montenapoleone for luxury shopping, the Duomo di Milano, and a final excellent Italian lunch before the airport.
- Allow extra time on weekends and Friday afternoons, the Lake Como to Milan road can be congested with Milanese weekend traffic, particularly in peak autumn foliage season (mid-October).
Fall Italy Grand Tour: Insider Tips
Book museum tickets before you leave home. The Uffizi, the Accademia (David), the Vatican Museums, the Doge's Palace, and the Colosseum all require pre-booked timed entry in fall. Walking up without a reservation at any of these in September or October risks long queues or sold-out entry. Book online as soon as your dates are confirmed, this is the most important practical step on this entire itinerary.
Time your Tuscany stay for harvest season. If your dates allow any flexibility, push your Tuscany nights toward late September or early October, when the grape harvest is in full swing. Vineyards across the Cortona and Chianti regions welcome visitors during harvest, the countryside is at its most colorful, and truffle season opens with the white truffle's peak in October and November.
Water taxi from Venice station to the Gritti Palace. The connection costs considerably more than the vaporetto but transforms arrival into Venice from a logistical exercise into an extraordinary experience, speeding through the Grand Canal on a polished wooden boat as the city's palazzos slide past is one of Italy's finest travel moments. Do it at least once.
Pack layers for the Dolomites. October temperatures in the Dolomites can drop to near-freezing at altitude even on sunny days, and early snow above 2,000m is not unusual from mid-October. Bring a proper waterproof jacket, thermal base layers, and good walking shoes, the alpine hiking on this itinerary is straightforward but requires appropriate gear to be genuinely enjoyable.
Book Grand Hotel Tremezzo directly for closing dates. The hotel typically closes for winter in November, exact dates vary by year. Confirm the hotel's seasonal operation when booking, particularly if your travel extends to late October or November. Its closure dates are firm; plan Lake Como accordingly.
Reserve the Il Falconiere Michelin dinner in advance. Il Falconiere's restaurant is one of Tuscany's most acclaimed tables and fills quickly, particularly during harvest season when the estate is at its most atmospheric. Contact the hotel directly when booking your room to secure a dinner reservation, this is the meal of the Tuscany leg and should not be left to chance.

Fall Italy Itinerary FAQs
Everything you need to know before planning your 14-day luxury fall Italy grand tour, from timing and logistics to hotels and seasonal food.
Fall is widely considered Italy's finest travel season. September through November brings cooler, more pleasant temperatures for sightseeing in Rome, Florence, and Venice; significantly smaller crowds at every major sight; and the country's most spectacular natural beauty, Tuscan vineyards at harvest, Dolomites larch trees turning gold, and Lake Como reflecting autumn colors. Truffle season opens in October, wine harvest festivals fill the countryside, and hotel rates drop meaningfully from peak summer levels. Every destination on this itinerary is genuinely better in fall than in summer.
14 days is the ideal minimum for covering Italy's greatest northern and central regions at a properly unhurried pace. This itinerary visits six distinct destinations, Rome (2 nights), Tuscany (2 nights), Florence (2 nights), Venice (2 nights), the Dolomites (2 nights), and Lake Como (4 nights), with enough time at each to experience it properly rather than simply photograph it. Travelers wanting to add southern Italy (Puglia, Amalfi Coast, or Sicily) should plan a separate dedicated trip or extend to 18–21 days.
This itinerary features six of Italy's most iconic luxury properties, each chosen for its location and the experience it enables: Hotel Eden in Rome (Dorchester Collection, Michelin-starred rooftop, Spanish Steps); Il Falconiere Relais & Spa in Tuscany (Relais & Chateaux, Michelin-starred dining, vineyard estate near Cortona); Four Seasons Hotel Firenze (Renaissance palace, Florence's most beautiful private garden); The Gritti Palace in Venice (Luxury Collection, 15th-century Grand Canal palazzo); San Luis Lodges in the Dolomites (alpine lakefront chalets and treehouses); Grand Hotel Tremezzo on Lake Como (iconic floating pool, Bellagio views, Belle Époque grandeur). All six can be booked with VIP perks through a travel advisor at no extra cost, book here.
This itinerary combines private transfers and Italy's high-speed trains: Rome to Tuscany by private transfer (~2–2.5 hours); Tuscany to Florence by private transfer or train (~1–1.5 hours); Florence to Venice by high-speed Frecciarossa train (~2 hours, book in advance on Trenitalia); Venice to the Dolomites by private transfer (~2–2.5 hours); Dolomites to Lake Como by private transfer (~3 hours through Alpine passes); Lake Como to Milan Airport by private transfer (~1 hour). Private transfers can be arranged through Daytrip or your travel advisor.
Fall unlocks Italy's finest seasonal foods. In Rome: cacio e pepe, carbonara, coda alla vaccinara, and carciofi alla giudia (Jewish-style fried artichokes). In Tuscany: Michelin-starred dining at Il Falconiere, white truffles shaved over pasta (peak October), ribollita, and bistecca alla Fiorentina. In Florence: bistecca, lampredotto, and Chianti Classico. In Venice: sarde in saor, risotto al nero di seppia, and cicchetti at local bacari. In the Dolomites: speck, canederli, venison, and strudel. At Lake Como: fresh lake fish (lavarello, pesce persico), risotto, and Lombard cuisine with mountain views. Truffle dishes appear across Tuscany from October and are the defining fall Italy food experience.
A rental car is not required for most of this itinerary. Rome, Florence, Venice, and Lake Como are all best explored on foot or by water transport. Private transfers handle the airport connections and inter-city legs where trains are impractical. The exception is the Dolomites section, having a car for Days 9–10 allows you to explore mountain passes (Passo Gardena, Tre Cime loop) at your own pace. Most Dolomites hotels can arrange local car rental, or private guided day tours are an excellent alternative if you prefer not to drive mountain roads.
For September and October travel, book 4–6 months in advance for the Gritti Palace, Four Seasons Florence, and Grand Hotel Tremezzo, all consistently in high demand for fall, which is peak luxury travel season. Hotel Eden and Il Falconiere can typically be secured 2–3 months ahead for fall dates, though earlier is always better for preferred rooms. San Luis Lodges in the Dolomites should be booked as early as possible during peak foliage season (October). Booking through a travel advisor gives you VIP perks, complimentary breakfast, room upgrades, and resort credits, across all six properties at no extra cost.

Fourteen days through Italy's greatest destinations in its most beautiful season is one of the finest trips available to a traveler anywhere in the world. Each of the six stops on this itinerary offers something completely different from the last, ancient Rome's weight of history, Tuscany's harvest-season landscape, Florence's overwhelming Renaissance beauty, Venice's canal-laced unreality, the Dolomites' Alpine drama, and Lake Como's serene lakeside luxury, and yet all of them feel unmistakably, deeply Italian in the ways that matter most.
Plan the bookings that need to be planned early, the Uffizi, the Doge's Palace, the Vatican Museums, the Il Falconiere dinner, and the hotels themselves, particularly the Gritti Palace and Four Seasons Florence. Arrange the private transfers in advance so every arrival is seamless. And then leave room for the unplanned: the trattoria you find by accident in Rome, the vineyard that invites you in for a glass during harvest, the morning Venice fog that makes the Grand Canal look like a painting. Those moments are why Italy in fall is, for so many travelers, the trip of a lifetime.
