The Ultimate Ischia Travel Guide
Everything you need to plan the perfect escape to Italy's enchanting thermal island — from luxury hotels and hidden beaches to the best spas, restaurants, and insider tips.
Ischia is one of Italy's most enchanting and underrated islands, a volcanic gem rising from the Bay of Naples where natural hot springs bubble beneath lush gardens, medieval castles crown rocky promontories, and colorful fishing villages spill down to crystal-clear coves. If you're looking for an Italian island escape that combines wellness, beauty, and authenticity, this is it.
Known as the "Island of Eternal Youth," Ischia has been drawing travelers since Roman emperors soaked in its geothermal waters. Today it remains gloriously itself: less polished than Capri, less touristy than the Amalfi Coast, and all the more beautiful for it. You'll find world-class thermal spas, dramatic coastal hiking, Michelin-starred dining, and some of the Bay of Naples' best beaches, all wrapped in that distinctly unhurried Italian island rhythm.
This guide covers everything you need to plan an unforgettable trip: how to get there, when to visit, the best hotels, from clifftop thermal resorts to intimate boutique properties in Sant'Angelo, the top things to do, the best beaches, spas, restaurants, and the insider tips that make the difference between a good trip and a great one.
"Ischia rewards those who slow down, wander the harbor at dusk, soak in a cliffside thermal pool, and let the island's ancient, volcanic magic do the rest."
How to Get to Ischia
Ischia is an island, so every journey ends with a ferry, and that crossing over the Bay of Naples, with Vesuvius on the horizon, is one of the great travel arrivals in Italy. Here's how to get there from wherever you're starting.
Fly into Naples International Airport (NAP), the main gateway to the island. From the airport, take a taxi or private transfer to the port (Molo Beverello or Calata Porta di Massa) to catch your ferry or hydrofoil.
From Naples, ferries and hydrofoils sail directly to Ischia Porto, Casamicciola, and Forio. The journey takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the vessel. Book in advance during peak season (May–September), they fill up fast.
Arriving from Rome, Milan, or another Italian city? Take a train to Napoli Centrale, then transfer via taxi or metro to the port for your ferry connection. High-speed trains from Rome to Naples take just over an hour.
A private transfer from Naples Airport directly to the port is the most stress-free option for arrivals with luggage. Book in advance for a flat rate, particularly useful if you're heading straight to a clifftop resort with no appetite for logistics.
Best Time to Visit Ischia
The island has something to offer year-round, but the shoulder seasons are where the magic truly lives. Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) deliver warm weather, blooming gardens, manageable crowds, and better hotel rates, a combination that's hard to beat.
Ischia by Season: What to Expect
My personal recommendation: May is the sweet spot. The island is warm and sunny, the gardens are in full bloom, and the summer crowds haven't yet arrived. If fall is your season, aim for late September to mid-October, still swimmable, and the light over the Bay of Naples becomes extraordinary.
How Many Days to Stay in Ischia?
Ischia is a place best savored, not rushed. While it's technically possible to see the highlights in two days, you'll spend most of that time wishing you had more. The magic of the island often reveals itself in the quieter moments, lingering over a long lunch, watching the light change from a clifftop spa, stumbling into a sun-drenched piazza at the end of a long walk.
- 1–2 days: A taster, explore Ischia Porto, visit Aragonese Castle, and squeeze in one thermal spa session. Good as a day trip from Naples but not ideal for really experiencing the island.
- 3 days: The minimum for a real taste, cover the main towns, hit one or two beaches, and spend an afternoon at a thermal park.
- 4–5 days: The sweet spot. Explore Ischia Porto, Forio, and Sant'Angelo; visit La Mortella Gardens; try multiple beaches and spas; take a day trip to Procida.
- 6–7 days: Ideal for a true slow-travel escape, hike Mount Epomeo, discover hidden coves by boat, dine at leisure, and fully decompress.
Getting Around Ischia
Getting around the island is part of the experience. Ischia is compact enough to navigate without a car, and frankly, the narrow streets and limited parking make that the smarter choice. That said, the island is well-served enough that flexibility is easy to find.
The best way to explore village centers. Sant'Angelo, Forio, and Ischia Porto all reward wandering, narrow alleys, colorful stairways, and harbor views reveal themselves around every corner.
Buses run frequently between all main towns, beaches, and attractions. It's affordable, reliable, and how the locals travel. A circular line covers the whole island, including Forio, Casamicciola, and Sant'Angelo.
Taxis are easy to find at ports and main squares. Scooter rentals offer maximum flexibility for reaching hilltop villages and remote spots, just be prepared for winding, narrow roads and occasional scooter traffic.
Short ferry connections enable day trips to Procida and Naples. Private water taxis grant access to hidden sea caves and secluded beaches completely unreachable by land, well worth arranging for at least one afternoon.
Key Towns of Ischia: Where to Base Yourself
Ischia is divided into six municipalities, each with its own character and appeal. Choosing the right base shapes your entire experience of the island, here are the five towns you need to know before you book.
The island's vibrant hub and main port. Corso Vittoria Colonna buzzes with restaurants, boutiques, and gelaterias, while Aragonese Castle lords over the harbor. The best base for first-time visitors who want to be in the middle of everything.
Famous for Citara Beach, the Giardini Poseidon thermal park, and La Mortella Gardens. Forio has a more local, relaxed atmosphere than Ischia Porto, excellent restaurant scene and some of the island's best sunsets.
A breathtakingly picturesque car-free fishing village at the island's southern tip. Colorful harbor, boutique shops, luxury hotels, and sunset views over the Tyrrhenian Sea. The most romantic base on the island.
Renowned for its thermal springs and wellness culture, this quieter town is ideal for those prioritizing spa time and slower days. Great access to Mount Epomeo hiking trails and a genuine local atmosphere.
Refined and sophisticated, with San Montano Bay's serene beach, excellent luxury resorts, and a distinctive mushroom-shaped rock in the sea. The island's most polished and quietly glamorous village.
Best Hotels in Ischia

Top Things to Do in Ischia
Ischia is an island full of unforgettable experiences, from ancient medieval castles and volcanic hiking trails to hidden sea caves and centuries-old healing spas. Whether you're a culture seeker, nature lover, or simply want to slow down by the sea, the island delivers in every direction.
- 01Visit Aragonese Castle. One of the most dramatic medieval fortresses in Italy, the castle sits on its own rocky islet connected to Ischia Porto by a stone bridge. Explore towers, churches, and dungeons with sweeping bay views in every direction, arrive at dusk for the most atmospheric experience.
- 02Soak in the thermal spas. Ischia has over 100 natural hot springs, visiting at least one thermal park is non-negotiable. Giardini Poseidon in Forio, Negombo in Lacco Ameno, and Castiglione in Casamicciola are the top choices, each with multiple pools, gardens, and sea views.
- 03Explore La Mortella Gardens. Created by British composer William Walton and his Argentine wife Susana, La Mortella in Forio is one of Italy's most beautiful private gardens, tropical plants, fountains, sculptures, and hillside terraces overlooking the sea. Unlike anywhere else in Italy.
- 04Hike Mount Epomeo. The island's highest peak at 788 meters offers a rewarding half-day hike through vineyards and volcanic rock to panoramic views of the entire Bay of Naples, including Vesuvius and Capri on a clear day. Start early to avoid the midday heat.
- 05Take a boat tour. The most spectacular way to see Ischia is from the water. Private boats and group tours depart from Ischia Porto and Sant'Angelo, revealing sea caves, hidden coves, and coastal cliffs that are completely inaccessible from land.
- 06Day trip to Procida. Just a short ferry hop away, Procida is one of Italy's most photogenic islands, pastel-colored harbors, steep lanes, and an authentically unhurried atmosphere. Perfect for a full-day excursion from Ischia.
- 07Wander Sant'Angelo at sunset. The car-free fishing village of Sant'Angelo is at its most magical in the golden hour. Stroll the harbor, sip an aperitivo at a waterfront café, and watch the sky turn pink over the Tyrrhenian Sea.
- 08Swim in the natural thermal beach pools. Along Maronti Bay and Citara Beach, geothermal vents warm the sand and sea naturally, creating free, extraordinary thermal bathing spots that are uniquely Ischian. Fumarole Beach is the most spectacular of these.
Best Photo Spots in Ischia
Ischia is endlessly photogenic, a volcanic island where ancient architecture, coastal cliffs, and pastel-colored villages combine at every turn. These are the locations that will fill your camera roll, and the timing tips that make each one sing.
Top Beaches in Ischia
Ischia offers a remarkable variety of beaches, from long golden stretches to intimate pebbly coves and geothermally heated shorelines. One important note: pack water shoes. Many of the island's most beautiful spots have rocky or pebbly ground rather than soft sand, and they'll transform your beach days.
- Spiaggia dei Maronti (Barano d'Ischia), One of the island's longest and most beautiful beaches, with golden sand, thermal springs accessible nearby, and a lively local atmosphere. One of Ischia's absolute best.
- Citara Beach (Forio), Famous for the adjacent Giardini Poseidon thermal park. This broad beach combines excellent swimming with direct access to world-class spa facilities.

- San Montano Beach (Lacco Ameno), Tranquil and refined, enclosed by gardens and luxury resorts. Ideal for a relaxed, crowd-free day with exceptionally clear water.
- Fumarole Beach (Barano d'Ischia), Ischia's most unique beach experience: natural geothermal vents heat the sand and water, creating natural thermal pools right on the shoreline. Unmissable.
- Cava dell'Isola (Forio), A quiet pebbly cove with dramatic rock walls and turquoise water. Less well-known and all the better for it.
- Cava Grado (Ischia), A small, local favorite great for snorkeling and quiet moments well away from the crowds.
Where to Eat in Ischia
Ischia's dining scene is a celebration of the Mediterranean, fresh-caught seafood, sun-ripened local produce, handmade pasta, and wines from the island's own volcanic vineyards. From Michelin-starred restaurants with panoramic terraces to family-run trattorias where the catch of the day is recited from memory, eating well here requires almost no effort at all.
The local specialty you must try: coniglio all'ischitana, rabbit braised with tomatoes, white wine, and herbs, cooked slowly in terracotta. Pair it with a glass of Biancolella, the island's signature white wine, and you'll understand immediately why Ischia's culinary reputation punches well above its size.

Top Thermal Spas in Ischia
Thermal spas are the soul of Ischia. The island sits on an active volcanic field that feeds over 100 natural hot springs, and the Romans were soaking in these mineral-rich waters long before anyone built a hotel here. Budget at least one full spa day, you'll wish you'd booked more.

- Parco Termale Tropical (Sant'Angelo) , Ocean-view pools, waterfalls, and terraces overlooking Maronti Bay. A great mid-priced option with all the thermal benefits and fewer of the crowds.
Insider Ischia Travel Tips
Pack water shoes. Many of Ischia's best beaches and swim spots are rocky or pebbly. A pair of lightweight water shoes will transform your beach days and make thermal pool entry far more comfortable.
Skip driving if you can. Ischia's roads are narrow, winding, and routinely occupied by scooters coming the other way. Local buses, taxis, and the occasional scooter rental will take you everywhere you need to go with far less stress.
Book ferries in advance. During peak season (June–August), ferry sailings from Naples to Ischia fill up, particularly on weekends. Book your outbound and return tickets as soon as you have travel dates confirmed.
Reserve thermal parks early. Giardini Poseidon and Negombo in particular reach capacity on summer weekends. Book online in advance to guarantee entry, especially if you have a specific day in mind.
Visit in May or September. Both months deliver warm, sunny weather, swimmable seas, and none of the August crowds. Hotel rates are also considerably more reasonable, and the island infinitely more enjoyable.
Slow down and savor it. Ischia rewards patience. Linger over long lunches, watch the sunset from Sant'Angelo, walk the harbor at dusk, sip local Biancolella wine. The island's greatest pleasures cost almost nothing, they just require time.

Ischia Travel FAQs
Everything visitors most often ask before planning a trip to Ischia, from the best time to go to how to get the most out of the island's famous thermal spas.
Spring (April–June) and fall (September–October) are the ideal seasons, warm weather, manageable crowds, and better hotel rates. May is a particular favourite: genuinely sunny and warm, yet uncrowded. Summer is beautiful but busy, especially in August. Book ferries, hotels, and thermal parks well in advance. Winter is peaceful but some hotels and attractions operate on limited hours.
A minimum of 3 days is needed to see the highlights, but 4 to 5 days is the sweet spot for a truly fulfilling visit. This gives you time to explore the key towns (Ischia Porto, Forio, Sant'Angelo), visit La Mortella Gardens and Aragonese Castle, spend a full day at a thermal park, and enjoy the beaches at a relaxed pace. A week is wonderful if you want to add hiking, a day trip to Procida, or simply slow down completely.
For the ultimate luxury spa experience, San Montano Resort & Spa in Lacco Ameno and Mezzatorre Hotel & Thermal Spa in Forio are exceptional. For classic grand-hotel glamour, the iconic Regina Isabella in Ischia Porto is hard to beat. For romance in a car-free village setting, Grand Hotel Il Moresco near Sant'Angelo is outstanding. I can book any of these with complimentary breakfast, upgrades, and resort credits at no extra cost. Reach out here.
They're very different islands and both worth visiting. Capri is more glamorous and polished, with designer boutiques and celebrity cachet. Ischia is larger, greener, and more authentically Italian, with better beaches, world-class thermal spas, and significantly fewer crowds. Ischia also tends to be more affordable. Many visitors do both on a Bay of Naples trip, using Ischia as their base and taking Capri as a day trip.
Take a ferry or hydrofoil from Molo Beverello or Calata Porta di Massa in Naples directly to Ischia Porto, Casamicciola, or Forio. The journey takes 1 to 1.5 hours depending on the vessel. Multiple companies operate this route. Book in advance during peak season (May–September) as sailings fill up, particularly on weekends.
Don't leave without: visiting Aragonese Castle at sunset, spending a full day at a thermal park (Giardini Poseidon or Negombo), wandering car-free Sant'Angelo in the evening, walking through La Mortella Gardens, and eating rabbit cooked in the traditional Ischian style at Trattoria Il Focolare. If you have extra time, a boat tour around the island reveals sea caves and coastline you simply can't access any other way.

Ischia is one of those rare destinations that delivers more than it promises. It doesn't have Capri's famous glamour or the Amalfi Coast's dramatic cliffs, and it doesn't need them. What it has is something harder to manufacture: genuine character. Ancient volcanic landscapes, centuries of healing tradition, some of Italy's best cooking, and an authentically Italian pace of life that the island's more famous neighbors have largely traded away for tourism.
Whether you're soaking in a geothermal pool above the bay, watching the sun set over Sant'Angelo, or hiking to the summit of Mount Epomeo with Vesuvius in the distance, Ischia has a way of permanently lodging itself in your memory. Go. Stay longer than you planned. You'll understand why the moment you step off the ferry.
