From Milan, take a direct Trenitalia train to Como San Giovanni or Varenna-Esino depending on where you're staying. Journey times are roughly 40–60 minutes, arriving directly into a lakeside town with no need for an airport transfer.
Renting a car gives you flexibility for exploring the wider region. However, roads around the lake are narrow and winding, and parking within the lakeside towns can be extremely limited. Historic centers may have ZTL restrictions, check in advance.

Lake Como is a destination best savored at a leisurely pace. While a quick trip is rewarding, the magic of the lake often reveals itself in the unhurried moments, lingering over a long lunch, watching the light shift on the water, discovering a village that isn't in any guidebook.

Book restaurants well in advance. The best lakeside tables, particularly at Mistral, La Terrazza, and Il Sereno, fill up weeks ahead in peak season. Don't leave dining reservations to the last minute.
Use ferries instead of cars. Parking is scarce and driving into the heart of villages is often restricted. Ferries are scenic, relaxing, and efficient, embrace them as the primary way to move between towns.
Book villa tickets in advance. Villa del Balbianello in particular sells out quickly in peak season. Book online at least a few days ahead, as walk-up entry is not reliably available.
Base yourself strategically. Bellagio is central but pricier and busier. Varenna is quieter and equally beautiful with great ferry connections. Como works well if you're arriving by train. Think about pace before choosing your base town.
