How to Get to Cinque Terre

By Air: The closest airports are Pisa International Airport (PSA) and Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA). Then take a train to La Spezia.

By Train: From major Italian cities, take a high-speed train to La Spezia, then transfer to the Cinque Terre Express, which connects all five villages.

By Car: Driving is not recommended as roads are narrow, parking is extremely limited, and the villages are best explored on foot.

By Ferry: Ferries connect La Spezia, Portovenere, and Levanto to the Cinque Terre villages (except Corniglia, which is inland).

Best Time to Visit Cinque Terre

The best time to visit Cinque Terre depends on the kind of experience you want to have.

Spring (April-June) is ideal, with pleasant weather, blooming wildflowers along the trails, and fewer crowds-perfect for hiking and exploring each village at a relaxed pace.

Summer (July-August) is the busiest season, bringing warm temperatures and vibrant energy. It's great for swimming, boating, and long seaside dinners, but expect more tourists and higher prices.

Fall (September-October) offers beautiful weather, fewer visitors, and calmer seas-ideal for hiking, photography, and soaking in the charm of the villages without the summer rush.

Winter (November-March) is quiet and peaceful, with some hotels and restaurants closing for the season. It's best for travelers seeking solitude, dramatic coastal scenery, and lower prices.

How Many Days to Stay in Cinque Terre

For first-time visitors, 2-3 days in Cinque Terre is ideal to explore all five villages-Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Monterosso al Mare-while enjoying scenic hikes and seaside views.

If you have 4-5 days, you can take your time exploring each town, relax at the beaches, enjoy a boat tour along the coast, or take a day trip to nearby Portovenere or Levanto.

A 1-day visit works for a quick taste of the region-perhaps visiting two or three villages by train or ferry and sampling local seafood and wine.

For those staying more than 5 days, you'll have time to slow down, hike the entire coastal trail, discover hidden coves, and experience the relaxed rhythm of local life in this UNESCO-protected paradise.

  • Taxi Boat or Private Tour: Ideal for a more personalized experience, with stops in hidden coves or lesser-known swimming spots.
